How it works
- CO₂ counter: CO₂ emitted worldwide so far this year, using the Global Carbon Budget 2025 figure of 42.2 billion tonnes a year (about 1,338 tonnes per second).
- Carbon budget: CO₂ the world can still emit for a 50% chance of keeping warming to 1.5 °C. It starts from 170 billion tonnes on 1 January 2026 (Global Carbon Budget 2025) and counts down at today’s rate.
- Both are estimates spread evenly over time, not live measurements. See how the counter works.
- Resizes to fit: works from about 260 px wide. A height of 160–180 px fits best.
- No cookies, no analytics, no third-party scripts, and calm motion for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
Questions and answers
Is the CO₂ counter widget free?
Yes. Both widgets are free for any website, including schools, blogs, businesses and non-profits. Please keep the small credit link.
Does the widget track visitors or use cookies?
No. The widget is a small static page with a few lines of JavaScript. It sets no cookies and loads no analytics or third-party scripts.
Where do the widget’s numbers come from?
Both widgets use the Global Carbon Budget 2025. The counter spreads its estimate of 42.2 billion tonnes of CO₂ a year (fossil fuels plus land-use change) evenly over the year: about 1,338 tonnes per second. The carbon budget countdown starts from 170 billion tonnes left on 1 January 2026, for a 50% chance of keeping warming to 1.5 °C, and counts down at the same rate.
Can I show the counter on a big screen or in a presentation?
Yes. Choose a widget and theme, then select Open full screen. The numbers grow to fill the window, so you can show it on a projector or TV, or share that browser window in a video call.
